B.S.A (The Birmingham Small Arms Company) is a British based company formed in Birmingham in 1861. BSA is a former manufacture of guns, vehicles and military equipment located in an area of Birmingham called 'the Gun Quarter'. In 1910 BSA began producing complete motorbikes and at its peak in the 50's BSA was the largest motorcycle producer in the world.
The brilliant engineer Val Page designed BSA's new 500 single in 1937, while at the same time bringing some rationale to BSA's complex product lineup. It was now made up of 250 and 350 singles in what was called the "B-class", and the top-of-the-line 500 heavyweight class was divided into 3 groups itself. The M22 was the 'cooking version' the M23 Silver Star was the sports machine and it had a specially-tuned engine with a higher output than the M22; and the M24 Gold Star which was really a street-legal race bike. Val Page included several innovative and modern features in these new machines. The forged steel backbone of the previous models was replaced by a brazed steel tubular frame with a single backbone. The sump in the crankcase was discontinued, and the mag-dyno was moved to the rear of the cylinder and driven by a chain from the right side. But the big news was the full enclosure of the top end valve gear. The Silver Star engines get a tuning from BSA works. Highlights are air-hardened cylinder, a high-compression piston and 'hotter' cams.
This overhead camshaft machine is an older unit. The engine runs fine and powerful. The rotor of the alternator is missing. The BSA is equipped with an Amal carburetor, Lucas lighting set and a comfortable foot shift. There are complete papers from Belgium.

Val Page a intégré plusieurs caractéristiques innovantes et modernes dans ces nouvelles machines. L'ossature en acier forgé des modèles précédents est remplacée par un cadre tubulaire en acier brasé avec une seule ossature. Le carter de vilebrequin a été supprimé, et le mag-dyno a été déplacé à l'arrière du cylindre et entraîné par une chaîne du côté droit. Mais la grande nouveauté est l'encapsulation complète des soupapes de haut de gamme. Les moteurs Silver Star sont mis au point par BSA. Les points forts sont un cylindre durci à l'air, un piston à haute compression et des cames plus "chaudes".
Cette machine à arbre à cames en tête est une ancienne unité. Le moteur fonctionne bien et est puissant. Le rotor de l'alternateur est manquant. La BSA est équipée d'un carburateur Amal, d'un jeu d'éclairage Lucas et d'un confortable pédalier. Il y a des papiers complets de Belgique.
